Spanish style carved wooden headboard

The so-called Spanish beds belong to a 19th century fashion: the Gothic Revival. In the midst of Romanticism, society looked back and found in the Middle Ages a source of aesthetic and symbolic inspiration. Cabinetmakers thus recreated furniture that evoked the solemnity of ancient castles and cathedrals.

The headboards of these beds, tall and turned, are recognizable by their dark wood and vertical, pointed shapes, reminiscent of Gothic pinnacles and arches. Its presence imposes, transmits solidity and a certain majesty, very different from the brightness and color of the Olotin beds.

More than just a place to rest, these beds were also a symbol of prestige and good taste: bringing a fragment of the medieval spirit to the room, reinterpreted with 19th century artisan resources.
